On working boats, the cratch area was used for storage of ropes and other working gear. On boats for living aboard, this area is used as an extra room or outside seating area. Sometimes there are front and top boards similar to the working boats, providing a means for fastening a cover to form a "conservatory". Hire boats usually have no boards and no cover, providing an outside seating area.
