Guillotine Lock Gates (River Nene)

The guillotine gates on the Nene can be daunting when one first meets them. Arriving from upstream, the guillotine must first be closed (push and hold the button). Having filled the lock and entered in the usual way at the top mitre gates, the button should be pressed until red light comes on then released. This will open the guillotine by about 6" to drain the lock. Once drained, the light will go off and the gate can be lifted by holding the button in. The three photos show the gate in the down, half, and open positions, as seen from a boat in the lock. Guillotine gates should always be left open. (photos taken later (21st) at Yarwell Lock)
