The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was built as part of the Ellesmere Canal (now called the Llangollen Canal). Construction was completed in 1805 under the direction of engineer Thomas Telford. It is 1007 feet (307m) long and the cast iron trough is placed (not fixed) on top of 18 hollow masonary pillars at a height of 126 feet (38m) above the River Dee.
