Built in the 1870's, the bridge between Sharpness and Lydney over the River Severn was primarily used by the River Severn Railway Company to carry coal from the Forest of Dean to the docks at Sharpness. After several accidents with barges hitting the bridge, it became uneconomical to repair, and was finally demolished 1967-1970.
This photo shows the remaining buttresses at the Sharpness end.
